There is the Port Arthur Historic Site (or something like
that) in Tasmania, Australia. It is the site of an original
convict prison where the conditions were, well, worse
than gross. The site was in use in the early
European settlement of Australia (pre-1800's) and the
buildings havent been restored (just maintained) and it is
very intersting, depressing and haunted! The annual
conference of the Australian Museums Association was held in
Tasmania last year, including a trip to the site -
one of our staff had 2 ghostly encounters there! There is
one part in the solitary confinement building where you go
in and they switch the lights off - you can't see more
than 1mm in front of your face - it's a horrible experience.
There is also the chapel for the prisoners where each seat
was hidden from the other by tall walls and they had to wear
hoods to ensure that they had absolutely no contact with any
other person. If you're ever down that way its definitely
worth a visit....
