I was remiss in not mentioning earlier that the STePS manual that AASLH has put together is a good set of general guidelines for all aspects of small historical institutions.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Reference and Scholarships
I am interning at a small, historic-house museum and serving as their
collections manager this semester, attempting to put the collections
into order. I had two questions and any information would be greatly
appreciated:
1) Is there a basic reference manual for museum professionals that
explains cataloging, preservation, and exhibition methods and
procedures?
2) Are there scholarships/grants available for small, private house
museums that enable them to purchase archiving and preservation
materials?
