Collections Internship - provenance research project
DEPARTMENT: Collections and Exhibition
FLSA STATUS: Unpaid
SUPERVISOR: Collections Assistant & Collections Manager
SCHEDULE: 2-3 days per week
START DATE: February 2011
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Collections and Exhibitions Department of The Jewish Museum is offering an exciting internship for a graduate level student. The intern will learn the fundamental principles of cataloging and provenance research. Excellent scholarly research skills and attention to detail are essential.
PROJECT BACKGROUND: In compliance with the American Association of Museums' (AAM) criteria for presenting provenance information on Nazi-Era objects to the public, The Jewish Museum has closely examined and is continuing to research the provenance, or ownership, records for approximately 379 paintings in our collection that were acquired after 1932 and created before 1946.
The intern will be working closely with the Collections Assistant on this in-depth research project. The bulk of the internship will be related to researching the provenance of museum paintings using the archives and holdings of The Jewish Museum as well as the resources of various libraries around the city such as the Frick, Watson, and NYPL.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to pursue a career in the museum field. The internship will provide experience on collections research and working with the most commonly used museum collections database software, The Museum System (TMS). The internship will also present an opportunity to learn how museums organize and document their collections. The intern will receive a museum identification card that allows for free admission to other museums and various discounts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Research collection paintings using the library and resources of The Jewish Museum, as well as conduct research off site at various libraries such as the Frick, Watson, and NYPL.
* Enter and edit data in TMS following the guidelines set forth in The Jewish Museum's Data Dictionary.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
* M.A. candidate preferred in Art History/Decorative Arts
* Excellent research skills
* Experience in data entry
* Detail-oriented and meticulous
