My thesis is examining free admission policies in American art museums. I am currently searching for literature (books, articles, essays) that discuss the history of admission charges. I'm most interested in when, how and why admission charges came about. The only thing I've been able to uncover is Thomas Hoving's book where he talks about admission on two separate instances (King Tut show and when the Met put in the cash registers).
Any help is appreciated!
