perhaps this is off topic for you, but I immediately thought of the use of nemonic devices and memory in Medieval learning and spiritual practices. Memory was fundamental to the Middle Ages See Mary Carruthers's The Book of Memory. Also The Craft of Thought is good.

It deals with our memory of and perceptions of the past in numerous ways and will probably trigger many ideas for you. It is one of the best books I’ve ever read (though the ideas are so thick and so rich that I can usually absorb and contemplate only small sections at one time).

> To celebrate its centennial in 2013, our museum is organizing an exhibition on the theme of “memory.” We’re looking at various aspects of memory, including personal vs. collective memory; the evocative power of the five senses; false memories; age and forgetting; mediation of memory through popular culture; and memorializing people and events. The show will include a few objects from our own collection, but the majority will be loans of both contemporary and historical works. I would love to hear from listers who can suggest possibilities from their own institutions’ collections that we might want to know about. Thanks!
