Curriculum Coordinator, Kinder Foundation Education Center Division, Education Department
Under the guidance of the Kinder Foundation Education Center Manager, this position works to provide curriculum support and expertise for K-12 student and teacher learning. Working closely with other members of the Education Department, the Curriculum Coordinator will provide engaging programming and curriculum resources for K-12 teachers and students, while developing school partnerships and other initiatives that position the museum as a center for teaching and learning. The Curriculum Coordinator will support these efforts through teaching from the MFAH’s expansive encyclopedic collection.
The Kinder Foundation Education Center (KFEC) serves the public as a source of information about the MFAH art collections. The KFEC has three principal audiences: K-12 educators, pre-service teachers, and museum visitors. The KFEC activities include: a lending library, space for exhibitions of student art, and a repository for MFAH-produced materials and resources.
Responsibilities:
With KFEC Manager:
Plan and implement select evening and weekend professional development programs for K-12 teachers of all subject areas including:
· Learning Through Art at the MFAH, the museum’s elementary-level curriculum (LTA/MFAH), is an interdisciplinary, art-centered curriculum for grades 1–6. LTA/MFAH connects the museum’s collections of world art into the classroom curriculum for art, language arts, math, science, and social studies. LTA/MFAH supports teachers through an extensive series of professional development workshops.
· Develop and implement a plan to expand the museum’s curriculum, Learning Through Art at the MFAH to middle school grades.
· Working collaboratively with education department staff, local K-12 teachers, and other experts, research and write interpretive materials on the permanent collection, exhibitions, and Teaching With Art website.
· Maintain and assist in developing new partnerships with K-12 area public and private schools.
· Plan and implement a series of workshops for parents conducted in the community based on LTA/MFAH.
· As a member of the education staff, participate in the development of the scope and long-term vision of MFAH’s programs and initiatives.
Administrative:
· Help to promote and market MFAH programs and resources to schools and related organizations.
· Assist with organization of materials and supplies and complete paperwork for KFEC programs.
· Assist in writing and development of promotional materials, including program announcements, and Web site text.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
· Understanding of current education theories and trends, especially in the art museum setting.
· Demonstrated excellence in writing and speaking about works of art, public speaking and verbal communication.
· Must have knowledge of art history and education and teaching experience.
· Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; must be able to handle many activities and projects simultaneously.
· Must be friendly and have a helpful disposition for dealing with the public, and able to work evenings and weekends.
Education and Experience:
· M.A. in Art History, Education, or Humanities.
· 2-3 years experience in museum education, planning education programs, or related teaching.
· Candidates should be sensitive to the enhanced public role that museums play in society and have a passion to communicate to others the joys and meanings of works of art.
