Position Title: Collections Manager
Primary Reporting Responsibility: Curator of Collections
Location: Buffalo Museum of Science, Buffalo, NY
Status: Full time/exempt
Overview: The staff of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences accomplishes its goals through the implementation of strong team processes and procedures. All staff are recruited, trained, directed and developed with this in mind. While staff will have position descriptions and well-defined reporting responsibilities, they are required to be flexible in both. They will at times be asked to perform as part of project teams or task forces, where their reporting responsibility and work requirements may be different from, while related to, their basic position description. Senior Staff is committed to identifying, nourishing, and employing the unique strengths and interests each person brings with them to their position.
Summary of Position: The care and management of the Museum's diverse collection. Ensure all procedures necessary to protect condition, quality, mediate access and use of collections. The Collections Manager will work with the Curator of Collections to improve collections management, utilization, and documentation as well as develop and implement a long term collections strategy in reference to AAM Accreditation requirements. Partnerships will be maintained with collaborating institutions as well as the Museum's Center for Science Learning and Experience Departments.
Essential Functions:
* Work with the Curator of Collections to identify strategies for improving collections storage and access.
* Implement the Board approved Collections Management Policy
* Supervise collection handling, access and care.
* Participate in task groups for the development of exhibits and programs.
* Facilitate collections access and supervise external researchers.
* Initiate, develop and implement collections grants.
* Manage and maintain documentation for loans and accessions.
* Maintain external partnerships with collaborating institutions.
* Respond to external collections inquiries and research requests.
* Recruitment and supervision of collection interns and volunteers
* Transition current collection databases to a pan-collections catalog using PastPerfect Museum Software
* Implement the Museum's Integrated Pest Management plan
* Regular monitoring of the museum environment.
Qualifications, Experience, Skills
* Minimum of Bachelors degree in anthropology, biological or natural sciences, or related field. Museum studies coursework preferred. Masters degree preferred.
* Experience in collections management required.
* Familiarity with NAGPRA desirable.
* Proficiency with database software. PastPerfect preferred.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office. HTML knowledge a plus.
* Experience working with exhibits/programs staff desirable

Physical Requirements:
* Lifting/carrying specimens and objects (up to 40lbs)
* Walking often within the Museum
* Speaking to groups of all sizes
* Listening and speaking on the phone regularly

Salary:
· $28K to $32K Commensurate with qualifications and experience
