I am not entirely in agreement with Ruth, I am afraid. Having avoided
such arrangements for many years, we now allow them and it's a good
source of income, the companies concerned DO pay, and damage does NOT
occur: the trick is to have a good contract in place, make sure the
company knows who is boss and monitor what is going on...

No doubt others have had good and bad experiences!

I'll search out a contract, if I can.

This is almost never worthwhile, in my opinion, as the film company
almost never actually wants to pay (have you discussed this?). Also, it
is not uncommon for there to be damage, and film crews are used to a
frightening amount of freedom on "set."

This topic has come up on Museum-L in the past, so a search of the list
archives should give you some guidelines. If you are on the AASLH
Historic
House Museums list, you can search those archives, too (if you aren't,
it's
on Yahoo Groups and I think you can search the archives without being a
member).

The most important thing, I'd say, is to be extremely specific on what
will
and won't be allowed, and that you retain as much control as possible.
Make
sure that they compensate the Historical Society appropriately for what
will
be a lot of the staff's time (you will want to have a member of the
staff on
site at all times when the filming takes place).

Others on the list will have more details for you, I'm sure.
