I agree that the question was too broad. I suspect that the person who made the query would benefit from grants such as the Get Ready grant program that is offered by the Upstate History Alliance for organizations in New York (hopefully there are similar programs in other states).
That grant will fund a consultant who can work with the organization to consider the appropriate mix of funding for that particular organization and also do some board training related to fundraising. For more information check out upstatehistory.org
I strongly encourage small museums to consider approaching the question comprehensively including board training rather than just focusing on benchmarking.
