RE: PhD. Programs in Museum Studies.
I can't tell from your posting what aspect of museum work
you want to go into. Based upon your signature, it seems as
though you're getting an MPA, so you would be heading
towards administration. Is that right?
In my 15 years or so of experience in the museum field, I've
never met anyone with a doctorate in museum studies who was
actually working in a museum. Of course, there are all sorts
of curators with doctorates, administrators with un-related
doctorates, and directors with "content" type doctorates (ie
history, botany, art history). The only place that I may
have met someone with a doctorate in museum studies was in a
university, and even then, I can't recall specifically (I
did study with a man with a Doctorate in Theater
Administration, which I found pretty exotic.)
So...for what its worth, my personal sense is that a
doctorate in Museum Studies would not be much help in the
museum world, but may be useful in the academic world.
