Marc provides excellent advice on datalogger settings for general monitoring purposes. I would add that I like to try to get approximately one year's worth of monitoring without having to relaunch - which, for a logger such as Onset's U-12 series, can be done by setting the sampling interval to 20 minutes.
Generally anywhere from 15-30 minutes is more than enough data for most purposes and once an hour can be fine if you actually have no ability to control your environment and you just want to have some general trend information. Sampling more frequently than every 15 minutes is overkill unless you have a specific need e.g. determining if a HVAC system is not performing properly, tracking whether doors are not being closed during certain hours, etc. Sampling every minute will just wind up creating a lot of excess digital data for storage.
I too advocate a monthly download but more frequently is fine if you want to stay on top of what is going on.

I read out our hydrothermographs one a week. I currently have them set to record temperature/relative humidity every 1 minute. It seems to work very well and my weekly read-out's are accurate and we are able to detect any inconsistencies and correct them in a timely manner. However, I am also wondering if recording every 1 minute is a bit of overkill?? I would be interested to hear feedback and suggestions from others as well.

Hello all,
I recently acquired several digital thermohydrographs. They seem to be incredibly flexible with their recording settings, and I was wondering how often should I set my loggers to record. For example , is recording the temperature/humidity hourly overkill or not enough? Also how often should I be reading these things out?
