Dear Peter,
Your friend might want to look at N. Elizabeth Schlatter's book, Museum Careers: A Practical Guide for Students and Novices. The whole book is helpful for anyone entering the museum field, but the chapter on "Preparing for and Gaining Museum Employment" may be particularly interesting for her. Schlatter discusses pros and cons of different types of degrees and certificates, and then what happens after that (internships, interviewing, etc.).

Best of luck --
