Two things:

1. The book damage is probably forever and is not something that can be
fixed in a reasonable way. The value of her book has probably been reduced
by at least half unless the author is sufficiently famous to outweigh any
condition of the book.
2. The boyfriend can be fixed by any competent veterinarian.

My sister bought a book recently, an antique first edition book from the
1930's and her boyfriend absentmindedly used the book as a coaster for his
glass. When my sister picked up the glass, a ring had formed and she said it
was a lighter color than the rest of the yellow cloth book cover. Does
anyone have a remedy short of sending it to a conservator? I don't think it
is so valuable as to warrant a huge expense. Thanks.
