If the items were unsoliciated gifts with no strings attached (ie. terms within a deed of gift) and you are just warehousing this stuff, you should have no problems disposing of the items without concern of legality. You could consider selling the items through a third party, if the condition is bad beyond repair there is nothing wrong with disposing, or if there is an institution with like collections, they may like to have the items... documented or not. You just need to make certain you keep track of what and where the items go and keep a simple hard file. You are not alone as all museums need more space and we have items that are warehoused for one reason or another. Have you discussed with your curators or director? Let us know what you decide to do and good luck.
