Strawbery Banke partnered with our local middle school library and the local public library to bring the NEA grant-funded program The Big Read to our city. We served about 1800 people with programming related to the book "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" which has ties to our site.
The Big Read is a wonderful programm now in its in 4th year. It's administrated by Arts Midwest, NEA's regional partner, but available across the country. Nonprofits like museums and arts centers may apply, but it's required that one of the project partners be a library.
We found the program to be fun and a great success, but also time-consuming. Grants are for $2000-20,000 depending on scope and community size. One of the great strengths of the program is the way it builds in the expectation that you will bring literature and content to people, not the other way around - meaning that it encourages museums to think creatively about potential partnerships with businesses, arts groups, social service groups, and others, and also results in the museum placing itself in many unconventional venues.
We were one of very few museums who applied and received the grant in 2008. There should be more!

Hello,
I am putting together an informal, free, lunch time learning hour (in
NYC on July 23) on the topic of successful museum-library partnerships
and collaborations. Does anyone have an example of a partnership they
have with a library (school, academic, public, special, whatever...)
that you would be willing to share with the attendees? Collaborations
can be small or large in scope as well as of limited or ongoing
duration. I would like to have some examples to show the attendees and
offer some tips and tricks for successful partnerships. =20

Please contact me off list with any insights or anything else. =20

Thanks for your help-
