Hello Elizabeth,
Luckily for one and all, mp3 players are becoming more and more user friendly. The following website has a section to simply browse the portable music players, giving brief descriptions about each. While they are pretty basic to use, brief instructions could be given to visitors before use.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] auditory aides
I am preparing an exhibition for travel. It is an art exhibition based on
the 5 senses. We are looking to add an auditory component to make it
accessible to all viewers. I have been thinking about mp3 players but am not
sure if they are user friendly and adaptable to all environments. Any
suggestions?
