Dirk -
Forgive my listing of things you already know, but one must cover all the
bases:
Have your utility company do a knock-down-drag-out energy audit so you're
sure you know where the energy isseus are, and so they can tell you what to
do first, and easily, to make a difference right away. The caulking and
weather-stripping you'd do to keep heat in, will also keep in air-conditioning.
Keeping the lights off until needed AND gradually changing to lower-demand
bulbs, will lessen the draw for lighting and for cooling. Colonial Williamsburg has
had tremendous results from timed lights in new galleries. But ifyou can't put
in those sensors or timers, just develop the habit of patrolling and turning off
lights..it will help.
Changing your non-collections spaces to 68 in the winter and 74 in the
summer should be a must. I live and work at 62 and 82 now...took awhile to
get there though.
Make sure your air filters are clean and your systems serviced
Monitor water use and figure out what you can reasonably do to reduce it -
because a LOT of energy expense goes to moving around that water. If you're
not using it, you're not paying for it to come or go, and you're not buying the
electricity to help it come and go. Automoatic faucets do less for you than
you might think (USGBC thinks you save 10% only), so think low-flow, no-flow
or dual-flush equipment next time you upgrade...if you're an historic house or
other site with tank toilets, fill up a container of water to displace the amount
put drawn into the tanks - every little bit helps.
And most of all - track you bills and record your changes so you know what
might be working in your favor.
Those are the biggest ones. Good luck.
