George Blood at Safe Sound Archive in Philadelphia is an excellent choice for this type of work (www.safesoundarchive.com). They specialize in digital reformatting of many, if not all, legacy audio formats.

Another great source for audio reformatting is the Association of Recorded Sound Collections' website. ARSC provides a trustworthy list of sound specialists throughout the country (http://www.arsc-audio.org/pdf/Directory2006-031.pdf).

Good luck --

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Transfer of audio tapes to digital files and other permanent media

Dear Friends,

I am hoping someone on the list can recommend a reputable company that
is in the business of updating media to digital files from older
technologies such as cassette tapes.

I have recently discovered in our collection an important oral history
that was
originally recorded in 1951, and transferred to a cassette tape in
1989. As far as I know, the cassette is now the only copy, and I am
reluctant even to listen to it, fearing that the tape may now be
brittle and snap in the process.

So, I am hoping to find a company that has a good reputation of dealing with
temperamental media to make copies that can be used by researchers in
our archives in the future.

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.
