When the Esplanade was being built in 2004-05, our storage consultant recommended a 10' by 20' (8' high) elevator, citing it as standard for other new museum constructions of our size. We didn't get that, and knew from the get-go we wouldn't, but we did get an 8' X 10' elevator. Even at that, the cost-cutters tried during construction to downgrade that to a 5' X 7' car, which definitely would have been too small.
We have, so far, been able to accommodate just about anything we've needed to in our elevator, although we have some storage equipment for rolled textiles coming in a few weeks that might prove interesting....
