The Greater Southwest Historical Museum, a regional history museum, in
Ardmore, Oklahoma, seeks a Curatorial Assistant as part of an IMLS grant
to catalogue the museum’s collection. This is a 24-month, full-time
position. Candidates must be available to start October 1, 2008. The
Curatorial Assistant will assist in the cataloguing, numbering,
cleaning, and rehousing of approximately 17,511 artifacts. A Bachelor’s
degree, Master’s preferred, in history, museum studies, or closely
related field and one-year of collections experience is required. Must
be well-organized and detailed-oriented and have strong written and
verbal skills. Familiarity with PastPerfect is preferred but not
required as training is provided. Salary is $24,000 per year with
benefits to include paid medical insurance, sick leave, and vacation

Below is the complete job description:*
Position Title: Curatorial Assistant (Temporary)*
*Reports to: *Curator
***Pay** Range**: *$24,000 per year, full-time
*Position Summary:* The Curatorial Assistant works on a range of
collections management, cataloguing, research, and preservation-related
duties. The Assistant works on preventative conservation of the
collection such as storing and numbering artifacts/objects and assists
in researching the function, use, manufacture, and history of artifacts
for cataloguing.
*Specific Responsibilities:*
· Assist to enter artifact catalogue information on the computer
database; assist in the housing of artifacts/objects in appropriate
acid-free storage packaging or boxes and label as required; and assist
with cleaning and basic preventative conservation of collections.
· Assist with the maintenance and documentation of the collection;
assist in the classification, description, and interpretation of
artifacts/objects; conduct research for identifying and interpreting the
objects; write interpretative and informational labels, brochures, and
other related materials as required; update and organize files.
· Respond to requests for information about objects;
*Qualifications/Education:* Bachelor’s degree in history, museum
studies, or closely related field and one-year of experience in
collections management is required; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience, substituting one year of experience in the
care and management of a historical collection for each year of the
required education. Must be well-organized and detailed-oriented, have
strong written and verbal skills, and have ability to work on multiple
projects simultaneously. Familiarity with PastPerfect database is
preferred.
