Furniture cleaning question: we recently put an early 19th century
office/work desk with cubbyholes out on exhibit. Before putting it out,
we cleaned the desk gently and used denatured alcohol to clean the
untreated (no paint, no varnish, no wax) wood on the interior of the
cubbyholes. But, the cubbyholes are still filthy - routine dusting
yields a black rag. Centuries of dust and smoke are probably still
present. Is there anything reasonable we can do to get these cleaner, or
should we reconcile ourselves to the grime?
Thanks for any suggestions.
