JOB SUMMARY:

This is a four-year term position in the Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services, San
Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
As an Exhibit Specialist, you will provide expertise and oversight necessary to fabricate,
install, plan, and develop museum exhibits for the Aquatic Park Bathhouse and the Park's
Visitor Center. You will be responsible for both exhibit fabrication and installation in the
park visitor center (3,000 square feet) and exhibit planning and design for the Aquatic Park
Bathhouse Building (8,000 square feet), supervising a staff of two temporary Exhibit
Specialists at GS-9 level. Your work will include planning the details of developing a
variety of conventional and non-conventional products that depict, aid or present subject
matter information, artifacts, or ideas. Work projects support and affect activities as
public education, information, training, and the quality of the visitor's time spent in the
park.
More than one vacancies may be filled using this announcement should the needs arise.
Relocation expenses will not be paid.
AREA INFORMATION: The park consists of a complex array of cultural resources including six
National Historic Landmark (NHL) ships dating from 1886, the 1939 Aquatic Park NHL District
and its contributing features and artworks, the NHL Building E in Fort Mason Center, and the
1909 National Register Haslett Warehouse which houses the Argonaut Hotel and the park's
10,000 square-foot Visitor Center. Other historic resources include several National Register
vessels and structures, over 130 historic small (<40 feet) water craft, 6.5 million maritime
artifacts, historic documents and photos, the 32,000-volume Maritime Library, and the grounds
of Victorian Park and the lagoon and beach at Aquatic Park. Assets are valued at over $540
million.
Located along world famous Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, California, the park has the
12th largest visitation in the system exceeding over 4 million visits annually. The park's
location, resources, and exceptional maritime collections interest a broad and diverse group
of visitors, maritime advocates, researchers, partner organizations, community groups,
elected officials, and city/county and state agencies. In addition to its many constituents,
the park has two Cooperating Associations/Friends organizations and partnership agreements
with the San Francisco Senior Center, a Sea Scout unit of the Boys Scouts of America, and the
Dolphin and South End Swimming and Rowing Clubs.
The park's annual operating budget is in excess of $8.5 million, including $7.0 million in
the ONPS fund source, $500,000 in project funds, and non-appropriated revenue sources and
donations of more than $1 million annually. Additionally, the park receives appropriations
for multi-million dollar construction programs to protect its assets. Over eighty Full Time
Equivalents and a volunteer workforce of 100 persons accomplish the park's mission.
