Curatorial Assistant – Application deadline: August 29, 2008
The Greater Southwest Historical Museum, a regional history museum, in
Ardmore, Oklahoma, seeks a part-time Curatorial Assistant as part of an
IMLS grant to catalogue the museum’s collection. This is a a 24-month
position requiring 25 hours per week. Candidates must be available to
start October 1, 2008. The Curatorial Assistant will assist in the
cataloguing, numbering, cleaning, and rehousing of approximately 17,511
artifacts.
A Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred, in history, museum studies, or
closely related field and one-year of collections experience is
required. Must be well-organized and detailed-oriented and have strong
written and verbal skills. Familiarity with PastPerfect is preferred but
not required as training is provided. Starting pay is $11 per hours with
benefits to include paid medical insurance, sick leave, and vacation time.

Below is a complete job description:
*Position Title: Curatorial Assistant (Temporary)*
*Reports to: *Curator
*Pay Range: *Starting pay $11 per hour, 25 hours per week
*Position Summary:* The Curatorial Assistant works on a range of
collections management, cataloguing, research, and preservation-related
duties. The Assistant works on preventative conservation of the
collection such as storing and numbering artifacts/objects. Volunteers
assist to research the function, use, manufacture, and history of
artifacts for cataloguing. He/She also assists with research,
preparation, and installation of temporary and permanent exhibitions.
*Specific Responsibilities:*
· Assist to enter artifact catalogue information on the computer
database; assist in the housing of artifacts/objects in appropriate
acid-free storage packaging or boxes and label as required; and assist
with cleaning and basic preventative conservation of collections.
· Assist with the maintenance and documentation of the collection;
assist in the classification, description, and interpretation of
artifacts/objects; conduct research for identifying and interpreting the
objects; write interpretative and informational labels, brochures, and
other related materials as required; update and organize files.
· Respond to requests for information about objects;
*Qualifications/Education:* Bachelor’s degree in history, museum
studies, or closely related field and one-year of experience in
collections management is required; or an equivalent combination of
education and experience, substituting one year of experience in the
care and management of a historical collection for each year of the
required education. Must be well-organized and detailed-oriented, have
strong written and verbal skills, and have ability to work on multiple
projects simultaneously. Familiarity with PastPerfect database is
preferred.
