The International Spy Museum is seeking a fulltime Collections Manager& Programs Associate
Apply your excellent collections management experience to manage and oversee our collection of 1000+ artifacts, images and books. Your organizational skills will be put to use as you maintain all records for the collection and process incoming loans for temporary exhibitions. Your strong communication skills are key as you interact with potential donors and respond to requests. In addition your interest and experience in educational programming will be utilized to coordinate the production of the Museum’s quarterly publication. You will also assist with the planning and implementation of all KidSpy and educator programs.
Credentials:
 MA in museum studies, administration, or related experience.
 Two years experience with collections management and registration.
 Proficient in Word, Filemaker Pro, Excel, Access, MS Office software, desk-top publishing, email, and Internet.
 Interest/ability in teaching children and family audiences
 Knowledge/experience with artifact care and conservation issues
 Excellent attention to detail
 Excellent oral and written communication and editing skills
 Strong planning and organizational skills
 Strong analytic skills
 Excellent follow-up skills
 Ability to work with multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines
 Proven ability to work collaboratively with others

For my rambling two cents, yes indeed there is a difference, but the line c=
an be blurry. Especially in the movies.
Treasure hunting/looting/plundering should be defined generally as the remo=
val of materials from any historical site for the purposes of personal gain=
without regard to other historical evidence at the site, proper archaeolog=
ical excavation methods, and all of the various laws of the land.
Archaeology should then be defined roughly as the removal of materials from=
any historical site for the purposes of education and the accumulation of =
historical data with full regard for all levels of historical evidence, pro=
per archaeological methodology, and taking into account all applicable laws.

I'm not aware of any evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) of museums having ob=
jects stolen because they have put collections on-line. I do know of a cas=
e where objects were stolen after pictures appeared in national newspapers =
following the official opening but that was in the days before newspapers w=
ere on-line. Important objects tend to be well publicised by museums anywa=
y (we want people to come and see them after all) and the public conciousne=
ss recognises museums and historic houses as places where there is potentia=
lly valuable stuff so I'm not convinced that on-line publication has any si=
gnificant effect on theft rates.=20=20

including photos of the objects. Having recently read older reports about
thefts in museums - "smash and dash" variety - I wondered if there has been
any evidence of these kinds of robberies (or others) in museums being
planned using online databases to target places with valuable objects?

Today, the Smithsonian is providing 800 images from seven museums,
research centers, and archives to the Flickr Commons-a photo-sharing Web
site. Flickr is one of the world's largest online communities where
people share their photographs with friends, family and the world.=20
Information about each photograph is also posted on the Web site. These
photos are a small, but broad ranging sample of the 13 million images in
700 collections at the Smithsonian-only a fraction of which have been
digitized. During the next several months, the Smithsonian will provide
more than 1,200 additional digital photographic images to Flickr. Our
participation follows the successful experience of the Library of
Congress posting two of its photographic collections on Flickr. We
expect many new audiences to see and learn about our collections on the
Flickr Web site, and to visit our Smithsonian sites as result. We also
hope to learn how web site visitors interact with our collections

Let's say a non-profit organization could identify its loss of income due
to copyright infringement. Wouldn't that loss have to be weighed against
any advance of the organization's mission? The point of non-profit status
is that a group's mission is beneficial to the public good, and income is
used only to further the mission. If "loss of income" could be equated with
"advance of mission," how has the institution suffered?
Consider a case where the non-profit is also significantly or wholly funded
by public money. I work on exhibits for the National Park Service. Any new
artwork we create or commission for exhibits immediately enters the public
domain. We have to be really, really careful about displaying things for
which someone holds copyright.

My volunteer group uses the calendar in gmail. Everyone was given the =
password and trained on how to add/change an "event", in this case, =
scheduling a time to come in. I just have to go to the calendar and see =
who is coming when so I can prepare for them. It's worked for us so =
far, tho if you have specific times you need people in (we don't, our =
ladies work behind the scenes) it may prove more challenging.

Archaeology is indeed more than the simple removal of the objects/evidence in question. In the context of what we were discussing(treasure hunting vs. archaeology in reference to the Indiana Jones character and the addition of Harrison Ford to the AIA board), it did not seem necessary to break out my textbooks from my undergraduate degree in anthropology to provide a really detailed definition/comparison. Sort of beating the dead horse, it seemed.
If we want to talk about archaeology in general, I would be happy to oblige.

For my rambling two cents, yes indeed there is a difference, but the line can be blurry. Especially in the movies.
Treasure hunting/looting/plundering should be defined generally as the removal of materials from any historical site for the purposes of personal gain without regard to other historical evidence at the site, proper archaeological excavation methods, and all of the various laws of the land.
Archaeology should then be defined roughly as the removal of materials from any historical site for the purposes of education and the accumulation of historical data with full regard for all levels of historical evidence, proper archaeological methodology, and taking into account all applicable laws.

Something just struck me about the original posting. While issues of copyright for items in the collection MAY be valid, I'm wondering if the original poster's concerns were that "Hey, they're stealing MY work product" (substitute my friends'/my coworkers' for my if need be). If that's the case, it may be a question of framing because your entity is a nonprofit for the common good in accordance with your probable mission statement and 501(c)3, and it would seem to me you have less ownership over authorship of exhibits than a for-profit product. Or am I missing something here?

letting potential crooks know what's available) is more than balanced by the
ease of identification if the item does turn up missing. But, of course, I'm

I tend to agree with the idea that this can work as publicity. As an
example, if a link had been included in the original posting I'd bet
many Museum-L members would have checked the pics out too.

If there haven't been many viewers of those pictures, it could be
something else: college students doing an assignment about the
exhibit/museum and sharing the pics online for use among themselves as
visuals. ("I won't clog up your inbox, I'll just post them online and
you can get them from there.") Just an idea...

Lastly, last year when the Creation museum opened up and this list was
sending around articles about it, I don't remember people complaining
when somebody's blog included many pictures of the displays and signage.
Rather, pics online give an idea of what to expect.

Services (IMLS) awarded 31 institutions grants totaling $20.3 million as
part of the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. This year's
grantees will provide educational opportunities to library students and
staff to strengthen Gulf Coast libraries; support school library media
programs; increase the number of librarians, archivists, and library and
information science professors; increase diversity in the library
workforce; and strengthen that workforce to better meet the needs of

The Dustbuster(R) just isn't cutting it anymore. We need to buy a backpack
model vacuum to clean our tatami mat floors. Since it is an open air site,
hepa filtration seems a bit excessive, but we would like something with a

The National Heritage Museum is pleased to present "Feeling the Presence
of the Past in the Age of Technology," a one-day conference to be held
July 22, 2008. The conference presents experts in digital media and
academic technology who will examine and discuss best practices in
presenting, researching, and teaching the past. The program features
presentations and hands-on workshops highlighting effective academic
uses of technology and new media.
Guest speakers include Daniel Cohen, Tom Daccord, and Douglas Kiang.
Daniel Cohen is Associate Professor of History and the Director of the
Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. He is the
co-author of Digital History: A Guide to Gathering, Preserving, and
Presenting the Past on the Web (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2005).
Tom Daccord is creator of Best of History Web Sites, an award-winning
web portal, and co-director of the Center for Teaching History with
Technology. He is co-author of the forthcoming Best Ideas for Teaching
with Technology (M.E. Sharpe, 2008) and author of The Best of History
Web Sites (Neal Schuman, 2007).=20
Douglas Kiang is a technology integration specialist with fifteen years
experience and holds a Master's Degree in Technology in Education from
Harvard University. In 2007 was one of only two Massachusetts teachers
to be honored as an Apple Distinguished Educator.=20
The conference will run from 9a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to historians,
educators, and technology specialists. The cost is $40. Lunch is
included.

I work at the University of Iowa Paleontology Repository and luckily we have
stayed dry during the flood. I know some museums in the Cedar Rapids area
did not fair so well and I and others from the Department of
Geoscience/Museum Studies program were wondering if there was any way we
could be of assistance to any of the museums. I wasn't sure exactly who to
contact so I thought I'd try this method. I-380 opened today so we can now
make it from Iowa City to Cedar Rapids and hopefully help some museums out!
