Changing accession numbers, even if it's only the prefix, is definitely
something to avoid. Years from now someone will wonder what happened to
the object referred to as N-something in an old report, and whether it
was a now-lost matching pair to S-something. Besides, the institution
really was "N" when the item was accessioned, so it's an important part
of the piece's history: you'll know that anything prefaced "N" was
acquired before 2008, and anything prefaced "S" was acquired afterwards.
Which credit line you use might depend on the context. It *was* acquired
by the Nebraska Art Association (for in-house labels), and *is* owned by
the Sheldon Art Association (for external loans). Perhaps "Sheldon Art
Association (formerly known as Nebraska Art Association)"?
