I have recently become the curatorial assistant and am looking for a great
reference site and or publication that provides a general guide to basic
curatorial practices? Any Suggestions?

Collections Manager - Part time
Tudor Place Historic House Museum and Garden, a 19th century site located 
on 5 = acres in Georgetown, Washington, DC, seeks a part time Collections 
Manager to advance its mission through the management and care of the 
object collection, including maintenance and documentation of records
relating 
to the 8,000 plus object collection.  Responsibilities include processing of

object collection, administration of loans, IPM and environmental
monitoring, 
archival and technical research, responses to inquiries, and other related 
tasks.   Interested candidates must have Masters degree in Museum Studies 
or related field with a concentration in museum collections management and 
three years experience with historic sites or museums. Please submit a

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:  Collections Manager

Reports to:  Curator 

Classification:  Exempt, Part-Time  no fringe benefits	


Purpose of Position: To advance the mission of Tudor Place through the 
management and care of the object collection, including maintenance and 
documentation of the records relating to the collection.

Responsibilities:

1.	Under the supervision of the Curator, completes processing of object

collection, including: inventory, accessioning, cataloguing, numbering, 
photographing, and data-entry. 

2.	Administers all loans, photographic, and administrative files,
including 
electronic database.  Administers all reproduction rights of the collection.

3.	Monitors physical condition and movement of collections, and assists

in the monitoring of integrated pest management, security, and the 
environment of exhibition and storage areas.

4.	Assists with the packing and transportation of the collection.

5.	Conducts archival and technical research relating to specific 
projects.  Assists with exhibition research and publications.

6.	Responds to inquiries and supervises access to collections.

7.	Other duties as assigned.


Experience and educational requirements:

1.	Masters degree (or work towards) in Museum Studies or related field

with a concentration in museum collections management.

2.	Three years experience with historic sites or museums.


Knowledge, skills and abilities:

1.	Knowledge of current museum collections management methods, 
including accessioning, art handling, cataloging of fine and decorative
arts, 
conservation and storage practices.

2.	Excellent written and oral communication skills.

3.	Ability to maintain effective working relationships and to work well

with others in a team environment.

4.	Self-directed and motivated.

5.	Exceptional organizational skills.

6.	Computer literacy including database applications (Past Perfect 
preferred) and digital imaging.
