Tudor Place Historic House Museum and Garden, a 19th century site located 
on 5 ½ acres in Georgetown, Washington, DC, seeks a Curator to advance its 
mission through the research, care, and management of an extensive fine and 
decorative arts collection.  Responsible for extensive object collection 
including collection management, conservation, and exhibition activities.  
Interested candidates must have Masters Degree in American decorative arts 
or material culture and four years curatorial experience with museums or

                                      POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:			Curator 

Reports to:		Executive Director

Classification:		Exempt, Full-time

Budget Responsibility:	Develop and monitor department budget	
		
Supervisory Scope:             Part-time Collections Mgr, Housekeeping Staff (3)


PURPOSE OF POSITION:    To advance the mission of Tudor Place through the 
research, care, and management of an extensive fine and decorative arts 
collection.  Responsible for the care of the object collection including 
oversight of the collection’s registration, conservation, and exhibition 
activities.  Additional responsibilities include research and interpretation as 
applicable to exhibition preparation and educational endeavors; disseminating 
results of that research through publications, exhibits, lectures, or other 
means; and assisting in fundraising activities. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

COLLECTIONS

1.  Conduct, coordinate, and oversee research initiatives.
2.  Manage access and use of the collection, through processing and 
supervising all loans, responding to collection inquiries, and maintenance of 
paper and electronic records. 
3.  Oversee all exhibition and storage areas. Implement and monitor 
environmental conditions. 
3.  Prioritize conservation needs and provide oversight of conservation 
projects.
4.  Assist in the development of interpretive themes and information for tours, 
exhibitions, and educational programs.
5.  Serve as liaison between staff and Collections Committee. Manage agenda 
and membership of the Committee.
6.  Manage all licensing agreements regarding the reproduction of collection 
objects.
7.  Recommend acquisitions and deaccessions to the Executive Director, 
Collections Committee, and the Board of Trustees. Implement decisions. 
8.  Oversee pest management program.
9.  Assist with decisions related to conservation of buildings.


EXHIBITIONS

1.  Develop topics and themes for exhibitions in coordination with the 
Executive Director and other senior staff.
2.  Conceptualize, design, execute exhibitions including selection of objects; 
integration of objects, display, interpretive information; and preparation of 
publications to accompany exhibitions.  Engage guest curators, scholars, 
educators, as necessary.
3.  Arrange and coordinate loan exhibitions for installation at Tudor Place.

EDUCATION

1.  Contribute to the intellectual content of the museum’s conferences and 
lecture programs.
2.  Coordinate the publication of papers and other research efforts.
3.  Lead tours and conduct special presentations.
4.  Assist in continuing education for docents.

ADMINISTRATION

1.  Prepare the annual department budget for operating and capital expense.
2.  Supervise departmental staff in the performance of their duties and 
conduct reviews of their work.
3.  Prepare Board presentations as requested.
4.  Compile monthly and annual reports on departmental activities.
5.  Assist in the preparation of press releases and promotion of the collection.

FUNDRAISING

1.  Develop and meet with potential and current donors and lenders.
2.  Execute grant proposals.
3.  Assist in fundraising efforts and with activities related to capital campaigns.


EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

1.  Masters degree in American decorative arts, material culture, or related 
field.
2.  Four years curatorial experience with museums or historic sites.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1.  Extensive knowledge of collection management, exhibition development, 
and current museum principles, practices, and procedures.
2.  Excellent skills in research tools and methodologies.
3.  Excellent writing and verbal skills.
4.  Demonstrated supervisory skills and interpersonal skills.
5.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships including 
Board members and to work well with others in a team environment.
6.  Self-directed and motivated.
7.  Computer literacy and experience with database applications.
