Dear List: I agree with everything Deb Fuller says about collection items
and film crews -- except the part about budgets, and the advice "Don't!"
Once, during a deal for some of my footage, a large studio founded on a
cartoon character, stretching credulity just a tad, pleaded with me about
their lack of a budget. I'm guessing sales of those hats with the ears on
'em were down. Just as Deb says, do play hardball, always, about handling
and coverage.
However, some studios are only one person -- with truly nothing but spit for
a budget. That was me for many years, producing award-winning documentaries,
fund raisers, and visitor information pieces for small, no-budget museums --
and for large, "no-budget" museums also. Indy producers of theatrical
features often make their films on shoestrings as well. The concept that
filmmakers are rolling in money is a mis-impression I had to unlearn too --
and did as soon as I got into the business!
And, if that curator -- where I obtained elements needed for a music video
-- had told a broke, unknown filmmaker "No" that day over the phone? Well,
the consequences of such a decision are some I can't even entertain.
Instead, she was extremely professional, with detailed insight; she agreed
only after including certain non-negotiable conditions, and conveyed very
high standards that made a serious impression on me.
Had the curator refused me, though, we would never have met -- been married
for the last couple of decades -- and the world would be lacking one amazing
13 year old who's existence improves the planet immeasurably!
Best regards,
Christopher Brown
