I agree with Dan. Focus group can be helpful if you choose representative participants, have good teasers to start the discussion, ask the right questions and if you combine it with other methods (surveys, interviews, user tests, or others). I wouldn't rely on focus group results alone as there is a big difference between what people say and what they do (an Italian proverb states that this gap is as big as the ocean).
To answer your question, more information about the scope of your project would be necessary. As I suppose that you don't want to share this with the list, I would recommend to contact a university in your area and ask professors of sociology or psychology for help. Maybe you can do a project class with them. When I was teaching usability evaluation at a university we were quite happy to find a partner for an interesting project.
When you got your results, you will face the challenge to make the abstract data actionable. For this issue I would recommend to use personas.
