Christian,
The most important detail in your post is that storage is in an historic
structure. Appropriate preservation of historic structures usually limits
the degree of climate control that can be implemented. As a general rule,
it is not possible to provide "ideal" preservation of both the collections
and the historic building. Compromises must be made. What these are depend
upon the nature of the specific building and the specific collections. A
good primer on these concerns is a PDF of a PowerPoint presentation I have
given at several conferences on Low-tech Environmental Control. This has
been offered in the past to MUSEUM-L readers. If you did not receive a
copy, please email me off-list and I will email one to you. I apologize
that this does not directly answer your question, but a cost per area can
not be estimated until you first determine the best approach for your
specific needs. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
