If you haven't already, check out the writings of Osa and Martin
Johnson. There is a museum in Chanute, KS devoted to them. Martin was
killed in 1937 in an airplane crash. there are many writings by his wife
Osa detailing their travels from 1917 to 1936. Plains, trains,
automobiles, elephants and camels. And more, I'm certain. Many of their
travel/safari documentaries are available on DVD, as well. Not all of
their travels were in exotic places.
