Director of the Castellani Art Museum

Niagara University (www.niagara.edu), a private Catholic university sponsored by the Vincentian Community, seeks a Director of the Castellani Art Museum. This full-time position will manage all aspects of museum operations as well as the development, conservation and interpretation of the collection it houses. 

The museum, a 23,000 sq. ft. building, is a regional architectural landmark with a central gallery that offers one of the largest exhibition spaces in upstate New York. The collection of over 5,000 works spans a wide range of styles and movements from the 19th century forward with a particular emphasis on modern and contemporary art. 

Requirements for this position include excellent leadership, financial and staff management, program development and fundraising abilities; Strong proficiency with managing operational budgets and external grants; Knowledge of the art market and an ability to cultivate donations for collection; An understanding of museum management theory and literature in the field of museum studies; Knowledge of national museum issues and policies; Excellent written, interpersonal and oral communication skills; A willingness to support Niagara University's Catholic and Vincentian mission. 

Minimum qualifications for the position include a master's degree in art history, fine arts or museum studies and at least five years experience in art museum management. In addition, the Director must be able to teach one or two courses annually in art history or museum studies. 

* Voting member of Acquisitions Committee;
* Handles administrative responsibilities for the museum Advisory Council;
* Serves as the liaison between Advisory Council and staff;
* Cultivates and stewards major donors, corporate contributors and grantors;
* Supervises administration of museum and annual budget;
* Supervises museum personnel and volunteers;
* Prepares and administers grants and fund raising with collaboration of Institutional Advancement;
* Develops and conserves art museum collection;
* Performs curatorial duties with museum curators;
* Oversees exhibitions, events and programs;
* Prepares and teaches courses at Niagara University;
* Attends dinners and other functions as part of fundraising efforts;
* Attends working sessions with schools, community advisory groups, exhibition openings, public programs and workshops, professional board meetings, conferences, other professional activities, etc. often times on weekends or evenings;
* Provides tours of the museum;
* Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Excellent research, writing, curatorial, museum management and grant writing skills.
2. Excellent abilities in: leadership; financial and staff management; program development; fundraising.
3. Proficiency in managing an operating budget and grants
4. Knowledgeable in the field of art history and museum studies.
5. Knowledge of the art market and ability to cultivate donations for collection.
6. Excellent written, interpersonal and oral communication skills.
7. Comprehension of software applications.
8. Knowledgeable of museum management theory and literature in the field of museum studies.
9. Knowledge of national museum issues and policies.
10. Ability to read and comprehend the English language sufficiently to be able to read and understand various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.
11. Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to be able to verify accuracy of purchase order items, costs and budget compilation.
12. Sufficient manual dexterity with proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine and fax.
13. Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone with or without reasonable accommodations.
14. Ability to drive a personal, rented or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis.
15. Ability to work some evenings, weekends and hours other than 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
16. Ability to travel locally and outside Western New York when necessary.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
1. Masters degree in art history, fine arts or museum studies required; Ph.D. in art history preferred.
2. Minimum of five years experience in art museum management required including successful program development, financial and staff management, collections management, and fundraising. 
3. Contemporary art knowledge with research and writing experience preferred.
4. Valid driver's license required. License must meet insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
