Marc:
I'm actually trying to come up with an answer to question 3.11 of the AAM
Standard Facility Report. The question reads: "What is the maximum usual
variation percentage within a 24-hour period in your temporary exhibition
gallery? There is a blank for both temp & %RH for spring/summer &
fall/winter.
Thanks so much for offering to help. I hope you can explain this to me more
clearly than the form does!
Thanks again,
Amanda

Subject: Re: variation percentages?
Amanda,
I'm not exactly sure what question you are asking, but I'll try to answer
anyway. RH is a percentage. Therefore, any variation is already a
percentage. For example, if RH ran from 50% to 70% over a period, there was
a 20% RH variation. If this is what you are looking for, you're done. If
not, please refine the question if you can. Temperature is much more
difficult. Assuming you are working in the Fahrenheit system, temperatures
can run from -451 degrees to +infinity. Thus, it is not really possible to
assign a percentage to a variation. You technically could use a percentage
of variation from a given number, for example inaccuracy of a thermometer of
+/- 10%. The trouble here is that if the temperature reads 0, technically
there is no variation (10% of 0 = 0), while if it reads 100, the variation
is 10 degrees (10% of 100 = 10). Normally variation for temperature is
given as +/- degrees F, not as a percentage. Again, please clarify if this
does not help.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] variation percentages?
Hello Everyone:
At the risk of revealing my math deficiency, how does one determine the
variation percentage of temperature (Fahrenheit) and RH within a certain
period? I know there has to be a formula out there somewhere, but I'm not
having much luck finding it. (I think I may be suffering from a debilitating
case
of Friday-itis.)
Thanks!
