Mythbusters, a great show, tested this myth. Fairly scientific with a
variety of bulbs including fluorescent, LED and incandescent to see
if it was more efficient to leave on than turn on and off every time
you need light. Their conclusion was that it is more efficient to
turn on and off (regardless of the amount of time you might not be in
the room) than to leave it on.
They also tested the length of time the light source lasted.
Incandescents least, flourescents next and the LEDs they gave up on
because they could not wait till they died.
