Hello all,
I am a M.A. Candidate currently completing my thesis paper and am looking
for feedback and opinions from professionals in the field with an interest
in photography and how the context photographs appear in affect audience and
critic response and understanding to the work.
To give some background on my thesis, in my paper I am looking at Larry
Towell's work from the project No Man's Land in book form, in magazines and
newspaper publications and in exhibitions. I am examining how the images
function within these differing contexts and how audiences and critics have
reacted to and understood the work by looking at reviews, interviews,
letters, etc. I am interested both in the work of Towell, as well as in the
changes that are taking place in the field of photojournalism, where I see
that the work is leaning more towards art journalism now that magazines and
newspapers have ceased to be the most important outlet for these images. I
am positing that presenting these images (which often tend to be
multi-faceted) in a variety of contexts, such as exhibitions, books, on the
Internet, etc., at the same time is perhaps a better approach to presenting
the work, as each context allows for different facets of the issues pictured
within to be highlighted and explored.
I would be interested in hearing any opinions on the current state of in
which photojournalists seem to be producing images that blur the line
between news and art, as well as the current trend in which these images of
current events are being presented in books, magazines, journals, musuems,
commercial galleries, in blogs, etc., simultaneously.
Any comments, opinions, ideas or path for further research are much appeciated.
Thanks!
Stefanie
