Particularly with smaller organizations, it always
helps if the new Board member has already had some
familiarity with the organization. Perhaps they
volunteered at a special event or special fundraiser
for the organization?
I guess for a new person to come on the Board, who has
no knowledge of the organization, my first question
would be "why are you here?"
However, I suppose there are instances when a special
talent is needed on the Board [primarily financial]
when a new Board member may not have familiarlity with
the organization. So, in that case, mentoring by other
Board members seems like a good idea.
