Melissa,
Plastics are very problematic materials for conservators because they
not only are inherently unstable and become embrittled and deteriorate
given time, temperature, humidity, and light exposure, but also
because almost all solvents in our conservation arsenels can cause
irreversible damage.
If there is a way to place it back and support it in place on an
ethafoam pad or a clip, for example, I would suggest that. If there is
no other way of getting it back in place, then avoid things like
scotch tape or most adhesives, except for those that are water-based,
such as a PVA (white glue). Use the minimal amount (a few small dots
in the center of the body of the break - you want to avoid squeeze out
if possible). Even then that is a choice of last resort - so try all
non-adhesive possiblities first.
Cheers!
Dave
