Going back to the original post - up here in most of socialist Canada
mothers are entitled to up to about 4 months unpaid maternity leave
and either parent up to another 8 months of parental leave - giving a
potential total of 12 months. This is protected - their job can't be
taken, they can't be dismissed or discriminated against because of
taking such leave.
And as long as they have been working in a full time position for the
required amount of time, the government pays them a certain amount
which comes out of the Employment Insurance they and their employer
have paid over the years (same fund that pays unemployment benefit on
loss of a job) - 6 years ago, when my wife took this - it worked out
to about $1200+ per months.
Many employers will top this amount up to close to the mothers/
parents full regular wage - some for the whole 12 months
(Government, School Boards, bigger companies etc), other for 3 or 6
months of the period.
