Very well put.
The only things that I would add would be to take contract positions -
they may be short term, but they get you in the door and give you
experience on many levels. Also consider working somewhere that isn't
necessarily a museum or historical society - I'm working for a
healthcare system that happens to have an established archives. My
position evolved from a contract job (supplemented by daytime
secretarial work) that lasted for five years.
