Dear readers of the list,
there are a lot of firms offering data loggers for museums at diffent price levels. And on the other hand, I wonder why this discussion starts in 2007 in the rich new world while we in good old Europe have realized since a decade that hygrothermographs are better "show objects" than professional helpers. Have you ever seen a hygrothermograph sending an alarm signal? Everything it gives to you are true (or sometimes false) retrospective data. The result: You look more or less soon after these retrospective data but are unable to act instantly against dangerous situations. A data logger can be included into the security and conservational environment very easily. Some of them are so small that you do not even recognize them as visitor.
There is also a development here in Europe developing data loggers which can detect harmful gases in showcases, UV-light dosis, dangerous movements etc. So, hygrothermographs really seem to be out of date. But, of course, saying goodby is sometimes hard :-)
Greetings from the publisher
