Exhibition Designer and Preparator
Job Overview Perform activities related to design, production,
installation, dismantling, transport, and physical maintenance of
permanent gallery displays and changing exhibitions for the Fleming
Museum. Serve as primary liaison to UVM's Physical Plant for facility
care.
Typical Functions Design temporary and long-term museum exhibitions.
Prepare floor plans and layout drawings, determine methods and
materials, and develop time and cost estimates. Collaborate with
curator and exhibitions staff and utilize knowledge of aesthetics,
exhibition content, conservation standards, security and access issues
to plan and design exhibits. Organize and track workflow in
coordination with exhibitions staff.
Construct, maintain and dismantle exhibitions. Construct installation
props and walls, paint galleries, prepare artwork for exhibition (e.g.
matting and framing) and install art work and lighting. Utilize proper
art handling, conservation, and security standards. Maintain and
dismantle exhibitions.
Receive, move and unpack incoming art, and pack and release outgoing
art. Facilitate condition reports on both incoming and departing art.
Transport permanent collection objects within Museum.
Purchase materials for gallery and installation prop construction,
artwork prep, and lighting. Maintain a safe and organized workshop and
materials storage area.
Train and supervise work-study students.
Open, staff and close Museum when galleries are open to the public.
Design and construct renovations to collection storage space.
Primary liaison for facilities care; advise and coordinate with
Physical Plant staff and contractors regarding maintenance of HVAC,
security alarms, and other systems in Museum galleries and public
spaces.
Minimum Qualifications or
equivalent combination of
education & experience Bachelor's degree in a related or specialized
field and two years museum experience in exhibition design,
construction, and installation required. Carpentry, design and
construction, matting/framing, and lighting skills and experience
required. Knowledge of proper art handing techniques required.
Commitment to diversity and inclusion required.
A six month probationary period is required. Work week is Sunday-Thursday.
FY '07 Pay Band:
(Salaries are set within the band based on each candidate's education
and experience, internal equity, and/or available funding.) 27,890 -
