On 5/25/07 1:57 PM, Zickuhr, Kristine's electrons arrived as:
> For the record, I personally believe in evolution. And yes I said "believe".
> Let's not forget that it's still only a theory.
"Only" a theory implies that the science of evolution is hypothetical, and
lands somewhere low on the human credibility scale -- a sort of second-class
citizen of the knowledge world, tantamount to cavalier or unproven guessing.
In ordinary parlance, you might equate a theory with being a mere hunch or
just unfounded speculation. But in science, ideas and hypotheses climb many
levels of experimentation, testing, verification, and the ability to
predict, before reaching the pinnacle of being labeled a theory. Evolution
is a factual scientific theory, proven beyond a doubt. Maybe you are
confusing theory with hypothesis, and mean to say evolution is only a
hypothesis. Either way, you would be wrong.
