My institution is investigating bar coding our collection. We currently use
Filemaker 6.0 for our database, we're looking at 8.5 for the bar coding feature,
the majority of our collection is works on paper (well over 20,000 drawings,
prints, watercolors, pastels, and over 7000 photographs) and I'm trying to find
out if anyone has had success with a bar coding system and works on paper.
For example, loose works on paper that are not matted, are they placed in
mylar sleeves with the bar code attached, or is the flat file drawer coded to
indicate the current contents? It is not uncommon for our collection to have a
drawer with over 100 objects inside. Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks.
