POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: DIRECTOR OF EXHIBITS
The Waukesha County Museum seeks an experienced creative person to
coordinate the implementation of the Museums flagship exhibit Music,
Sound & Innovation: The Les Paul Experience. The exhibit will focus on
the science of sound and music using the story of Les Paul, electric
guitar innovator, inventor of the 8-track tape recorder and developer of
endless music techniques. The Director of Exhibits will spend 80% of
his/her time on the Music, Sound and Innovation exhibit with the
remainder of time on revitalizing existing and creating new exhibits.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in working
with science and technology exhibits, identifying and coordinating
qualified outside vendors to complete exhibit elements, staying within
budgets, schedules and timelines.

Director of Exhibits Job Description
Summary of Position: Manage all phases of exhibit production and
maintenance with a primary focus on developing Music, Sound &
Innovation: The Les Paul Experience.
Status: Full time, exempt
Report to: Executive Director
Oversee: Those working on exhibits, including contractors, volunteers
and interns
Responsibilities
Spend majority of time overseeing building and installation of Music,
Sound & Innovation: The Les Paul Experience.
Participate in strategic planning of exhibits along with management staff.
Design, build and install or oversee designing, building and
installation of all components of museum exhibits.
Work with exhibit researchers to develop design based on content.
Work with Director of Public Education on exhibit labels.
Work with Curator of Collections and Archivist to implement accepted
museum standards in handling and display of artifacts and archival
materials, including maintaining proper environment, eliminating risks
to artifacts and restore displayed items as needed.
Apply current knowledge of exhibit design concepts, techniques,
technology, innovations, etc. to museums exhibits.
Plan and provide preventive maintenance and repair to all components
of all exhibits.
Advise on selection of traveling exhibits. Oversee installation and
load-out. Prepare local connection components for traveling exhibits.
Organize exhibit production labs and workshop areas.
Establish and manage annual budgets for Exhibits Department including
each exhibit budget.
Train and supervise exhibits interns and volunteers.
Perform other related duties as assigned by Executive Director.
Education, knowledge, experience and abilities
Extensive knowledge of and experience with exhibit fabrication,
installation and lighting techniques and technologies, especially
hands-on exhibits on science and technology.
Extensive three dimensional graphics design experience.
Knowledge of and experience in proper handling of museum collection
objects.
Experience with CAD and computer graphics programs.
Experience with budget development and management.
Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in design or related field.
Preferred minor: Museum Studies or history.
Knowledge of and commitment to work within legal and safety
regulations and ethical conduct related to museum work.
Good communication skills desired, both oral and written.
Ability and willingness to work cooperatively with others, especially
on teams for exhibitions and special projects.
Strong organizational, problem solving and project management skills.
Work Conditions
Workshop and museum exhibit environments.
Job requires significant physical effort building and moving exhibits.
Will need to climb up and down stairs and ladders, bend, stoop, and lift
to move and retrieve materials, pull, push, lift and carry up to 50
pounds, reach both above and below shoulder height.
Involves some evenings and weekend hours.
Able to provide own transportation to perform principle duties.
