I thought some member of the list might have the answer to my question. We
have a small sample of bricks (ca. 1840) in our collection that were made
by a small-scale local brickmaker and have a rectangular, shallow recessed
(for lack of better word) area on one face. The recessed area is about one
inch from edge of brick on all margins and is deepest in the middle of the
brick (I hope I'm explaining this OK!). Is this recessed area a by-product
of manufacturing the brick, a by product of some method to remove brick
from mold, or does it serve a functional purpose? If this helps, the bricks
are 4 inches wide, 2.5 inches thick, and 8.5 inches long.
Thanks in advance,
John Peterson
