When I worked in a university museum we calculated a per-square-foot
value for campus services like cleaning and utilities, and showed them
in our budget as "parent institution contribution" same as our direct
university budgetary support such as staff salaries, travel and general
operating support.  Conversely, when we used some campus services such
as university vehicles or extra campus police for an event it was an
actual charge to our budget.  So we had something of a hybrid system.

But we never had a scheme such as is outlined below.  What is the
purpose?

Dear Museum-L people,

Here's a question for those working in universty museums. 

Macquarie University in Sydney Australia has a new Vice-Chancellor.  He
plans to introduce a space charging system for all activities on campus.
 We have no details as yet as to how the scheme will operate, but
essentially all our storage and exhibition spaces will be levied
according to a formula.  This will be seperate from standard
administration fees taken by the university on any income generating
activities in these spaces.  I have heard that a similar system is used
in some European and North American institutions.

I would like to ask a favour.  Can you let me know if there is any
similar style of rental scheme for exhibition and collection spaces in
your university?  

Naturally we have concerns about the viability of some of our smaller
museums and collections, particularly those for whom independent income
generation is difficult and Faculty/Division/Department support
tenuous.

I would welcome any information you can provide.
