Penn Center Gullah Studies Institute, Summer 2006
The historic Penn Center on St Helena will host the 2nd annual Gullah
Studies Institute on July 16-29 2006. Penn Center is the site of the
first school for former slaves, and is now a national Historic Landmark
District. The mission of Penn Center is to preserve the history,
culture, and environment of the Sea Islands. The summer institute
faculty is comprised of accomplished and recognized teachers and
scholars from across the country. Course offerings will cover history,
Gullah language, ethnomusicology of the sea islands, workshops and
lectures. Graduate and Continuing Education credit is awarded by South
Carolina State University. The institute is targets k-12 teachers,
college level teachers, historians, and all interested individuals. For
