John,
It is probabaly best to forget using actual seeds in your exhibit. If
you have no pests now you are almost certain to acquire some by
leaving out such morsels. I once heard a colleague talk about such a
case where the curator came to her, puzzled, and wanting to know why
she had to refill the corn baskets every week.
I think that it would be easy enough to find replica corn and squash
seeds for your exhibit.
