VERMONT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
CAPITAL GIFTS AND PLANNED GIVING ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION
General Description: This is a part-time professional position based in
Vermont with principal responsibility for coordination and implementation of
the Historical Society’s capital gifts and planned giving initiatives. The
position reports to the Director of Development.
Responsibilities:
1. Work with the Executive Director, the Director of Development and others
to develop and lead the capital campaign for the Society’s ongoing
renovation of the Vermont History Center in Barre.
2. Work with the Executive Director, the Director of Development and others
on identification, cultivation and solicitation of capital gifts.
3. Oversee the enhancement and growth of the Society’s planned giving
program, making it an integral part of VHS development efforts, with a
particular emphasis on building endowment.
4. As assigned, work with other VHS staff on attracting support and
providing staffing for programmatic initiatives such as Vermont History
Expo, Vermont History Day and the Community History Partnership.
5. As assigned, work with the Director of Development and the Director of
Community Relations on occasional membership/donor cultivation events.
6. As assigned, work with the Executive Director and the Director of
Development on occasional grant applications for support of VHS programs.
Environmental Factors:
Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Because of job
requirements, there is a need for occasional weekend and/or evening work.
Certain projects will require heavy workload and tight deadlines.
Modest travel requirements may occur, for which private means of
transportation must be available.
Qualifications: This position requires a flexible, highly-motivated,
personable individual with prior experience in non-profit fundraising and
development work. Leadership experience preferred.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of fundraising principles and practices, particularly for
planned giving and capital campaigns.
Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and other relevant computer programs and
software.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with VHS
staff, trustees, donors, and members/constituents.
Education and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree, preferably with major work in history or
another branch of the humanities.
Experience: Six years or more as a development professional for a
non-profit cultural, heritage or educational institution, including
demonstrated success with direct cultivation and solicitation of major
donors and supporters.
