We just started testing the motorola CP200 radios. They are smaller
than the P1225 most people seem to use, can take a fair beating (at
least what you'd expect them to), and can be programmed to whatever
channels you desire.
Now they aren't cheap, and they are still bulky by most standards. For
a 3 mile range, you'll be hard pressed to find a hardy unit that will be
a lot smaller without paying substantially for them. Try to avoid the
small consumer models as they aren't meant to last as long as you may
like or take the abuse they may be subjected to.
